  • Understanding Your Dosha: Vata, Pitta & Kapha Constitution

According to Ayurveda, every individual is born with a unique combination of three doshas – biological energies that control our physical and psychological functions. Understanding your prakriti (natural constitution) is the foundation of personalized Ayurvedic treatment.

The Three Doshas

Vata Dosha (Air + Space)

Vata governs movement, circulation, and nervous system functions. People with dominant Vata tend to be:

– Light build, quick movements

– Creative and enthusiastic

– Variable appetite and sleep patterns

– Prone to anxiety when imbalanced

Pitta Dosha (Fire + Water)

Pitta controls metabolism, digestion, and transformation. Pitta-dominant individuals are:

– Medium build with good muscle tone

– Sharp intellect and strong focus

– Good appetite and digestion

– Natural leaders, can be irritable when imbalanced

Kapha Dosha (Earth + Water)

Kapha provides structure, stability, and lubrication. Kapha types exhibit:

– Solid build, slow steady movements

– Calm, compassionate nature

– Strong immunity and endurance

– Tendency toward weight gain and sluggishness when imbalanced

Identifying Your Constitution

Your constitutional type is determined at conception and remains constant throughout life. However, your current state (vikriti) may differ due to lifestyle, diet, stress, and environmental factors.

Signs of Dosha Imbalance:

– Vata imbalance: Insomnia, anxiety, dry skin, constipation

– Pitta imbalance: Acid reflux, skin rashes, anger, inflammation

– Kapha imbalance: Weight gain, congestion, depression, lethargy

Balancing Your Doshas

Once you understand your constitution, you can make informed choices about:

– Diet suitable for your dosha

– Exercise routines that support balance

– Daily routines (dinacharya) aligned with your nature

– Seasonal adjustments (ritucharya)

Living in harmony with your doshic nature is the key to optimal health, happiness, and longevity in Ayurveda.
